Well, its been 2 weeks since I switched my keyboard layouts to the Dvorak simplified keyboard layout. If you havent heard of this before, its simply a rearrangement of your keys that are supposed to make you a faster typist. After pretty much adapting over these two weeks, I can honestly say that it is a faster keyboard layout than qwerty, if only by a little bit. This layout, which looks like this
clusters all the vowels on the left hand, and puts the most commonly used consonants on the right hand. These small changes really do stop your fingers from traveling all over the keyboard like it does with qwerty. The legend says that the qwerty was devised chiefly to slow down typists so that mechanical typewriters wouldn’t jam. I don’t know if this is true, but this layout has convinced me (after a painful transition period) that it is indeed faster, and I’ll be sticking with it!
