    Unity and the Bicycle Shed

I head an allegory at Scale9x from the head of the OpenShot video editing program last week that I think is pretty amusing and profound: “If you set out to build a nuclear power plant, there will be 2 people who know how the core reactor works, but everyone in the company will have a strong opinion on what color the bicycle shed at the front gate should be” Once Ubuntu repaints the bicycle shed by switching to Unity, it sure will be interesting to see the reactions from various segments of the community! Some people will hate it, some will love it, but it should shake up things for…

    New Compiz Animation: Bonanza

School’s not been out but one day and I’m already doing something [mildly] useful with my life. I wrote this effect yesterday that looks like the window is burning from the inside out. Why did I call it “Bonanza”? If you remember, there used to be a western TV show by the same name that had an old-western-style map that also burned from the inside out. Every time I see this effect, the catchy theme song from the show runs through my head. :D. Here’s a video of it in action: For planet users, here’s a screenshot in mid-burn: I’m pretty happy with how it looks, and also pretty happy…

    News in Animations

Animations Shake-up! For those of you who keep up with the latest git versions of compiz, you might have noticed some new, different things as far as the animation plugins are concerned. What used to look like this in ccsm: Now looks like this: Although most end users will see this as a cosmetic change only, there was a big code change (by Erkin) under the hood that allows animation sets to be loaded upon the user’s request. What does that mean? Users who only want basic effects only have to load the code that deals with the basic effects in the Animation plugin. Users who want more eye candy…

    Freewins Hardy Package for Compiz!

SmSpillaz and warlock_mza wrote a pretty cool plugin for Compiz that lets you rotate your windows around in 3d space called freewins. Basically, you can spin your windows around in any direction you want, so its pretty cool. I’ve been on a packaging binge as of late, so decided to package this plugin for stock Ubuntu Compizes. If I did it right, the package manager will complain if you’re trying to install this plugin with the wrong version of compiz. Please note, this is still an experimental plugin. Don’t cry if it does bad things. Here’s a short vid of the work SmSpillaz has been doing (as an appetizer to…

    New Compiz Shatter Effect!

Digg This! For a while now, I’ve wanted an effect for Compiz Fusion that makes closing windows look like shattering glass. I finally got around to coding it up, and am pretty pleased with the results! Take a look at the demo videos to see what I mean! Also, I took the time to make a debian package for Ubuntu Hardy, so you can easily install it, as well as get the other animations like Helix and Blinds that I’ve coded up! (Instructions for Ubuntu install after the videos) Many medium sized windows shattering: Effect in slowmo : Basically, I split the window up radially from a central point, and…
